Screen Writing (LO 3) Breakdown of the film

 

BREAKDOWN

 

 

Scene # 1

LIVING ROOM - DAY A typical middle class home. Noor, an adorable little girl, is sitting on the floor playing with a stick of lipstick and a makeup compact. A handbag lies next to her with its contents scattered. Zain, an older boy, walks into the room. His eyes widen when he sees the mess Noor has made. Then Zain said to Noor what are you doing? After that He quickly rushes to her and proceeds to put the items back into the handbag. Then again Zain said to Noor give me that lipstick, He snatches the lipstick and compact from her. And said You’re always getting me into trouble, He continues to pick up items off the floor.

Scene # 2

LIVING ROOM – DAY, Suddenly, Maida, a stern looking woman, enters the living room. She sees Zain kneeling on the floor holding the handbag in one hand, and a wallet in the other. She gasps. Maida You! Maida marches to Zain and grabs the bag and wallet. And then Maida said to Zain I knew it you little thief! She grabs Zain by the ear. Maida I knew I’ve been missing money since very long How dare you go through my things. Noor begins to cry, Maida grabs her arm roughly, Maida said to Noor that how many times have I told you to leave my things alone! Maida Scolds Noor and then she shakes her violently. 

 

Scene # 3

LIVING ROOM + KITCHEN – DAY, Zain runs to the kitchen and grabs a knife. He returns to the living room and points the knife at Maida. Then Zain tells Maida to let Noor go. And Maida looks at Zain and makes noise. But Zain said to Maida Let her go! (talking about Noor) Maida turns to Zain and sees the knife. She glares at him. And then she said You put that down right now before I call your father. Zain holds his position. Maida begins to inch towards him. Maida I said put it down!

 

Scene # 4

LIVING ROOM – DAY, Suddenly, Imran enters the room. He is wearing a tie and carries a briefcase. He sees Zain waving a knife at Maida. And Maida is shouting and Noor is crying. Then Imran ask What’s going on here?? Zain and Maida look towards Imran, speechless.

Scene # 5

Zain And Noor's Room - Night Zain sits on the edge of the bed while Noor's sleeps. He listens to Imran and Maida Fighting in the next room.

 

Scene # 6

Imran AND Maida’s ROOM – NIGHT Imran and Maida are arguing a lot and Imran is trying to convince Maida that they are children. And children make mistakes. Maida is saying I can’t take those kids anymore! Imran said to her Look would you just calm down? Keep your voice down! Maida They’re just troublemakers, Imran, I can deal with mischief. But can’t deal with stealing!  Then Maida to Imran, And you saw him, he was waving a knife at me. Imran Look I’ll take care of it alright?! Just relax will you?? I’ve had a long day and I don’t want to talk about this right now! Maida So you don’t care if he ends up stabbing me one day??

Scene # 7

Zain AND Noor’s ROOM - NIGHT Moments later, Imran enters. He walks and sits by Zain. Zain looks up at him. Imran Zain, what you did this afternoon was very wrong. Zain But dad, she was hurting Noor! Imran said to zain that Maida would never hurt Noor, She’s just trying to put a little discipline in you two. Why do you always have to make things so difficult for her? Zain looks down and does not respond. Imran She’s your mother now Zain.

Scene # 8

Zain AND Noor’s ROOM – NIGHT, Imran leaves the room. Zain pulls out a drawer at a bedside table. He pulls out a picture. Picture of Zain and Noor with a woman. He flips the photograph backwards and finds an address written. He reads it and places it back.

Scene # 9

EXT. HOUSE - DAY Maida opens the door and walks out, She is hold a bag on her shoulder. Zain is watching from inside the house. Moments later Zain walks outside the house.

 

Scene # 10

EXT.ROADSIDE - DAY Zain is walking on empty road, after walking for sometime He looks back and sees Noor. She is holding her white teddy bear in one arm. Zain stops and starts walking back to meet her. Then Zain said to Noor that stop following me and go home.

Scene # 11

ROADSIDE – DAY, Zain reaches one spot and sits down to rest. He looks around and sees Noor siting down looking at him. He stands up and starts walking again, and Noor starts following him.

 

Scene # 12

EXT.ROADSIDE - DAY They reach a busy road, rikshaws are passing by. Zain turns and looks at Noor and Waits for her. Zain stops a rikshaw, the rikshaw stops. He grabs Noor’s hand and enters in the rikshaw. And then he tells the rikshaw driver about the neighborhood, And says take us there.

 

  

Scene # 13

EXT.ROADSIDE/STREET - DAY Zain and Noor keep walking on the busy streets holding each other’s hands. They find themselves in between the tall buildings, busy crowds and heavy traffic of the city. After a while Noor says that I am hungry. Then Zain takes money out of his pocket and buy some food for Noor.

 

 

Scene # 14

EXT.ROADSIDE/STREET - DAY Zain and Noor walks towards a security guard, who stands in front of a shop. They query the address by showing him the photograph. The guard shakes his head.

 

Scene # 15

EXT.ROADSIDE/STREET – DAY Zain and Noor continue to ask everyone the address, while walking down the street. Some shake their heads and some don’t even respond. At the end of the street, they are blissed when one lady guides them with the directions. They walk in accordance and reach the Sunset Apartments.

 

 

Scene # 16

SUNSET APARTMENTS - DAY Zain and Noor walk from door to door till they reach the apartment 314. Zain knocks the door and waits for the response with a smile. Moments later a woman opens the door. Zain is surprised. He looks at Noor and turns back to the woman.

 

Scene # 17

EXT.ROADSIDE - DAY During the rush hour, Zain and Noor sit in between a busy street. Their clothes are worn out and they faces are dirty. Noor’s face is pale and her lips dry. Her dirty bare feet has a bulging over the skin. Zain begs for money, by running after each and everyone on the street. Noor sits in a corner and watches her brother beg.

 

 

Scene # 18

WAREHOUSE - NIGHT Zain and Noor enters into an old warehouse. They reach their spots of rest, which is the dusty floor with few cardboard pieces across. Noor lies on the floor. Zain reaches Noor. He observes the red spots that are developed on Noor’s back. He tries to touch her skin but takes back his hand. He strokes Noor’s hair and weeps simultaneously.

 

Scene # 19

WAREHOUSE - NIGHT Noor I’m hungry Zain continues to stroke her hair. Noor closes her eyes. Zain walks out of the warehouse. Noor opens her eyes and sees him going.

 

 

Scene # 20

EXT/INT.STREET - NIGHT Zain walks down the street and reaches a shop. He sees a lot of food material in the shop. He observes that no one is around. Cautiously Zain picks a couple of bread loafs from the shop and runs. An elderly man sees this and chases him. At a point he pushes Zain. Zain falls on the ground. The man starts beating Zain.

 

Scene # 21

STREET - NIGHT Noor rushes in and knees near Zain. She tries to cover him by her hands from getting beaten. She starts crying. The elderly man stops beating Zain and walks away. The group disperse while Zain gets into his feet with a lot of pain. Zain and Noor walk.

 

Scene # 22

EXT.STREET - DAY The streets are busy as usual. It is the rush hour again. Noor sits down and sees Zain is begging for money. A man in suit walks past Zain. Zain starts requesting this man harder for money. The man keep walking and while reaching his pocket. Zain keeps following him. Noor sees her brother walking away and follows him into the crowd.

 

Scene # 23

STREET - DAY As he reaches the spot, he finds out that Noor is missing. He starts searching for Noor. He walks across the streets, searches the shops, runs around everywhere but cannot find his sister. He gives up and begins to cry After a few minutes, some thought occurs in his mind and he walks quickly down the street.

 

 

Scene # 24

INT. WAREHOUSE - NIGHT Zain enters the warehouse and finds Noor lying down. He is shocked and relieved at the same time. He gets closer to Noor and sits beside her. Zain clears his wet eyes and walks out of the warehouse.

 

Scene # 25

EXT.COFFEE SHOP - DAY Zain and Noor are walking on the street as usual looking around to get something to eat. Zain looks across the street and landed his eyes on Maida sitting by a coffee shop window. Maida notices the two. They stare at each other. Zain then takes Noor’s hand and they begin to walk away. Maida keeps on staring at them walking away, Noor looks back at her.

 

Scene # 26

COFFEE SHOP - DAY Imran comes and sits down across Maida as she continues to stare out the window. Imran turns and looks where Maida is looking but sees only people walking and cars passing away. Imran what are you looking at? He turns and looks at her, she smiles and says oh nothing, just watching the crowd.

 

Scene # 27

EXT. ROADSIDE - DAY We see Zain and Noor, hand in hand, walking down a busy street.
